Jennifer Hudson told me last year that her upcoming film ”Winnie” — based on the life of Nelson Mandela’s controversial ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela — is a ‘’story … that I believe really has to be told.”
That’s why the Oscar winner is upset Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyers are making threats about the film, demanding script approval. Yet, with filming slated to begin May 31 in South Africa, director Darrell Roodt is forging ahead, telling deadline.com, ”It’s not for Winnie Mandela, it’s about Winnie Mandela.”
• Hudson has told friends the film will be ”very fair, showing Winnie’s attributes, as well as her faults.” Hudson claims she relates to Madikizela-Mandela because of her ability to overcome huge odds. ”I can’t wait to start the journey,” she told reporters Sunday.
